Principal's Message

Dr. Charles Young, EdD

Walnut Grove is a school where student achievement is central to all we do. Our efforts have

been acknowledged at both the state and national levels: California Distinguished School and as a

National No Child Left Behind/Blue Ribbon School. We received the Governor's Performance Award

every year in which it was available.

We try to go beyond the "basics," however. We have been a nominee for National School of Character,

and we are proud to be a member of the Pleasanton National District of Character.

We are considered a national leader in the area of environmental education. The "largest and fastest

growing environmental education program in the country," Go Green Initiative, began at Walnut Grove in 2002.

We were awarded the title of "National Go Green School of the Year" for 2008 as well.

Parents participate actively with staff in PTA (Parent Teacher Association), on the School Site Council

and on parent advisory groups. They support the multitude of extracurricular activities that take place

after school, during the evenings and on weekends. They help bring a "can-do" spirit to Walnut Grove –

an attitude that permeates all aspects of the school.

Similarly, teachers hold parents and students in extremely high regard. The students of Walnut Grove are world

class learners! They participate in a rigorous curriculum that incorporates standards and benchmarks

for all grade levels. A systematic assessment program is in place to help monitor learning and to

promote continuous growth for all students. Special programs have been developed to identify and

support students at all levels of the learning spectrum.

As a result of these efforts, student achievement levels are very high – our Academic Achievement Index (API)

is a "10" on a ten point scale. Check out our  WG 2008-09 SARC Report.

Finally, Walnut Grove is home to an extraordinary instructional team. Teachers and support staff are highly trained

and they employ proven and effective instructional methods. I am certain that you will find that Walnut Grove

provides an exceptional educational experience for all students.

Serving their needs and helping each to achieve his or her full potential is our mission.

Our Mission Statement

To capitalize on our continuous improvement process to enhance student achievement.

Our Goals

• To provide a balanced curriculum that attends to the arts, the sciences and to character development

• To promote high levels of academic achievement while meeting the needs of all learners

Our Shared Educational Beliefs

The following shared beliefs serve as a beacon for inspiring our work with students and families.

With these core beliefs at the forefront of our daily teaching, the students at Walnut Grove will become

outstanding contributors in our learning community.

We believe in:

·         Providing a safe environment that promotes trust, fairness, responsibility and respect for self and others;

·         Acknowledging hard work, challenges, and successes along the path of the learning journey;

·         Creating an environment that is supportive, caring and which provides creative, positive experiences

                                                that allow individuals to understand and capitalize on their potential;

·         Fostering individuality while also pursuing shared goals that reflect a community centered learning atmosphere.
