At Pleasanton Middle School we have
high academic standards for our students in regards to math.
In fact two years ago we eliminated all "remedial"
classes and placed the vast majority of our students in the regular
level math classes. All 6 th graders are placed in heterogeneously
grouped classes called MATH 6. At 7 th grade, approximately 80%
of our students are placed in the regular level of math, MATH
7. The remaining 20% are placed in PreAlgebra.
Similarly, the 8 th graders are divided into two groups. The
majority (about 80%) are placed in PreAlgebra while the remaining
20% take high school Algebra. Since making this change, more
of our 8 th graders are entering high school by taking Algebra.
There is an elective math class which is offered only to eight
graders who are stuggling with basic math facts and basic math
skills. Eighth graders may take this class in addition to their
regular math class. The results of this new class have been very
rewarding.
