About Foothill High School

Foothill High School, a four-year secondary school, is one of two comprehensive high schools and one alternative high school in the Pleasanton Unified School District, first opening in 1973. Currently enrolling about 2100 students--a student body that has doubled in the last eight years--the campus is located literally at the base of the foothills that border the inner eastern San Francisco Bay Area. A suburban community, Pleasanton is an economic mix, and our student body reflects a diverse economic spectrum. In order to accommodate for the increased enrollment, the District has obtained two successful bond measures for school renovation that have given us more classrooms, athletic space, and upgraded technology. While the town remains predominantly small and friendly in spirit, the actual population has grown larger as the result of the housing boom and proximity to Silicon Valley. With this influx, the demographics of the school have shifted, increasing the demand for more competitive academic programs to meet the needs of an upwardly mobile, newly affluent community. Our school's demographic data shows the following: Limited-English Proficient - 52 (2.41%); economically disadvantaged - 27 (1.15%); Asian - 327 (15.15%); Black, not Hispanic origin - 44 (2.04%); Hispanic - 107 (4.96%); Native American - 19 (.88%); Pacific Islander - 9 (.42%); White, not Hispanic origin - 1,570 (72.72%); Other - 75 (3.47%).

With a rich tradition of both care and accountability, we strive to help each student reach his or her full potential. Recognized as 2001 California Distinguished School and a 2002 National Blue Ribbon California Nominee, Foothill High School remains dedicated to school improvement. Scholastically, students excel, scoring above national, state, and district averages on standardized tests (STAR), High School Exit Examinations, and the Scholastic Aptitude Test. In fact, 2004 performance results show an Academic Performance Index (API) rating of “10” on a ten-point scale with a 31 point increase to 848. What makes us unique is that we are one of less than 35 schools in the state to have maintained an increase in API score for four consecutive years – testimony to the energetic team effort of staff, partnership with parents and community, and the support of our district. Advanced Placement Test results are also improving with 75% of 1,028 tests earning a 3+ score, up from 61% of 200 tests six years ago. See our annual achievement report for additional information. At Foothill High School each student is treated as an individual, held to high expectations, and given challenging learning opportunities to meet his or her academic needs. Working with families, students may select from traditional academic course offerings, student support programs, and a variety of honors and advanced placement offerings.

In an attempt to meet the needs of the whole child, the staff provides, in addition to our standards-based curriculum, numerous, active academic and service groups such as the Multi-Cultural Club, and a rigorous sports orientation reflected in the excellence of the athletic programs. At the same time, Character Education is an integral part of our core mission. Integrity, honesty, responsibility, respect, compassion, and self-discipline describe our community of character and are emphasized in every interaction with our educational partners. Parents play a vital role in student and school success. Our Academic/Activity Booster Club, Athletic Boosters, and Band Boosters, provide leadership and support. Our School Site Council helps guide our school improvement process. With such support, we are able to provide our students with a wide range of curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular learning opportunities in which students excel. The educational community of Foothill High School remains dedicated to school improvement, focused on student achievement, reliant on partnerships, and committed to communication. The mission of Foothill High School is to nurture and stimulate the intellectual, emotional and physical growth of each student. Expected school-wide learning results emphasize four growth areas for all students:
• Become independent, life-long learners
• Utilize essentials skills in current and future situations
• Strengthen personal character
• Practice active citizenship and concern for others
