Classroom Expectations and Procedures

Psychology

Ms. Cohn

Welcome to Psychology! I am greatly looking forward to this class. I must warn you that it is going to be a lot of work. Do not procrastinate. If you give this class everything you’ve got, you will find it rewarding and fun (yes, FUN!).

Classroom Expectations

  1. Be respectful
  2. Come to class
  3. Be on time
  4. Participate

Grading

Your grade will be based on the total number of points you earn over the course of the semester. Points are awarded for your notebook, homework, class participation, quizzes, tests, and projects. Grades are posted on the internet at all times and are updated every week, so you (and your parents) should always be aware of your standing in the class. The grading scale is as follows:

A 100-93%

A- 92-90%

B+ 89-87%

B 86-83%

B- 82-80%

C+ 79-77%

C 76-73%

C- 72-70%

D+ 69-67%

D 66-63%

D- 62-60%

F 59-0%

Attendance and Participation

  1. No late work will be accepted. Simply, the assignment is due on the day it is due. Exceptions will be made only for those who have excused absences. Long-term assignments such as notebooks and projects (ones where you have more than one weeks notice of the due date) will not be accepted late under any circumstances.
  2. You will have one day to make up the assignment for each day of excused absence (e.g absent Monday and Tuesday, you have until Friday to get in the make-up work).
  3. Absences must be cleared with the office within 48 hours of your return to school in order for your work to be accepted. Unexcused absences and tardies will result in points taken off of your notebook.
  4. Assignments missed due to a suspension may not be made up.
  5. I will issue you a calendar with the homework assignments for the month. This calendar is available on the internet. There will also be folders posted with the handouts, assignments, etc. covered in class. If you are missing any work, you must check the calendar and take out the appropriate work from the folders. It is NOT my responsibility to get work to you, that is what the assignment calendar, and folders are for. Check my web site, your calendar, folders, and a reliable classmate first, then me. If you take a field trip with another class, you are still responsible for completing the homework on your calendar.
  6. Make-up day for tests and quizzes is Thursday.  You will have two Thursdays from the day the quiz or test was first given to make it up.  Tests may be made up at 3:10 PM.  Anyone arriving after 3:25 will be asked to return the following Thursday (unless it’s the 2nd Thursday).  Quizzes may be made up at lunch and/or after school.  Please note: make-ups of tests and quizzes are at my convenience, not yours.  Therefore, making up missed tests may require you to miss work or practice.

Extra Credit

Extra credit opportunities may arise throughout the year at the teacher’s discretion. No more than 50 extra credit points will be accepted per semester.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism of an assignment (class work, homework, etc.) will result in a zero grade on the assignment. Plagiarism is defined as taking someone else’s ideas, writings, etc. and passing it off as your own.

Open Door

I appreciate hearing from my students. If you have something on your mind, let me know as soon as possible. You can also e-mail me at Jcohn@Pleasanton.k12.ca.us. Remember, I am here for YOU!! Let’s make this year a good one!!

Attitude

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company…a school…a home. The remarkable thing is you have a choice every day regarding the attitude you will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable…The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you…You are in charge of your attitudes." - Author Unknown
