The Mission
The Preamble to the United States Constitution states that —
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquillity, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
In order to “secure” these blessings of our democratic system, it is important that key values are practiced at an early age, in order to make these habitual in adulthood. Thus, to further this cause, a website dedicated to bring civic awareness and instill civic responsibility among high school students in Amador Valley High School, beginning right from Freshman year. We hope this effort will expand to other schools in Pleasanton Unified School District and beyond in the future.
Specifically, the goal of this website is to increasing civic awareness and participation among the younger population of this community, preparing them to be competent and responsible citizens after they become adults.
This website is a part of the California Campaign for the Civic Mission for Schools in the Pleasanton Unified School District (PUSD). The Campaign is an effort sponsored by Coalition for Civic Renewal, a group of concerned California individuals and organizations seeking to enlist support of education, business, law, veterans, labor, parents and service groups around the state to promote civic education in California .
The Goals:
- Encourage moral and civic virtues through volunteer and community activities to increase social responsibility in the community
- Increase voter participation among the young
- Encourage interest in government, history, law and democracy through:
- Participation in simulations of democratic processes (activities like the “We the People” program)
- Participation in School Government ( student legislative council, student body offices)
- Building knowledge about rights and encouraging the free exercise of those rights voicing opinions in the public forum, voting and petitioning.
This website will be a tool to get to know about many non-profit or volunteer organizations around the local community and Bay Area. In the “Volunteers” section, there are volunteer-matching websites that will help potential volunteers find organizations and opportunities of their choice.
Being civic responsible will have repercussions and benefits in other areas as well. This will add to students’ resumes for their college applications and future careers, showing they are active and responsible citizens in their communities.
